Prague to Bratislava, Slovakia

WHERE???  We hear you say.  Yeah, two weeks ago we'd never heard of this place either.  When we were in Vienna, Herta mentioned it as a possible day trip, but we went to Salzburg instead. A couple of days ago we were looking at the next leg of the journey, Prague to Budapest, about an 8 hour train ride. And wondered if we could break it up. And saw that the train goes straight through Bratislava, about 2/3 of the way, so why not spend the night. Why not indeed. So we booked a hotel and here we are.  Bratislava is actually the capitol of Slovakia. And it adds another country to the list of places we've been.

Those yellow things are cheese wheels. Our hotel is just at the end where you can see down the alley where the building is lighter.

We are in the old section of town and it's charming, but gosh, we just came from Prague. If we had come here first, we would have found it amazing, but after Prague, it sort of pales by comparison. But still it's nice to walk around the narrow little streets and enjoy the buildings.

Here are a couple of shots from the train

And here is the escalator that we had to go down in Prague to get to the metro. Dragging our suitcases with us. A friend of ours talked about it New Years Eve, how steep and scary it is. It is daunting, but we've seen escalators like this before, especially in London.  You just get on and hang on tight.

There is a sculptor here in this city who has works all over the place. The guide book said to see how many we could find. We found three, but plan to look again tomorrow. We leave at 2:00 for Budapest.

The guy on the right is actually a real person. Armando thought he was part of the sculpture until he moved and startled him!

A few more photos of Bratislava:

And one more note to our friends and relatives who can't imagine traveling without planning everything in advance - here's another example of our "go where the wind blows us" traveling... if we had booked everything before we came, we wouldn't be here tonight. And we did book our hotel before we got here.  (Okay, two days before we got here, but still, it was before!!) And I actually booked our Budapest hotel at the same time. So who says we don't plan ahead. Just sayin'.......
