Prague, Day 4

Today we mostly went to high places to get great photos. We started by taking the tram south along the river to Vysehrad, an old castle. Actually what's there are the fortified walls, some ruins, and the church of Sts. Peter and Paul, and an interesting cemetary.  First, looking south on the Vltava River.

Looking north toward Prague castle

This is the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul

Every square inch of walls and ceilings in this church was covered with art nouveau paintings. A husband and wife team painted the saints on the columns, one on each side of each column. The inside was amazing!

Here is a beautiful door of the church

There was a big cemetary with elaborate graves and crypts. This is a working cemetary, we saw graves since 2000, but it's so crowded we wondered how they actually perform funerals there.

See the pair of hands on this grave. We wish we knew who was buried here, and what the hands signify.

We walked back from Vysehrad to our hotel  - I wish we had a pedometer - we must be taking at least a million steps a day!!!  Here are some sights on the walk back.

Somewhere I read this is the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers building.

The National Theatre

A neat monument but we couldn't figure out what for. It's near the University.

Charles Bridge from the south

We finally got to the astronomical clock to see it strike the hour.... kind of a let down.  It chimes, the 12 apostles parade by and look down on us and a rooster crows. More fun was going up to the top of the Town Hall tower for the view. Unlike most towers we've climbed, this one actually had a lift.

From up there it didn't look real.  It looks like a miniature medieval town, or even a movie set. It looked like toys. Amazing. I love this old square and don't want to leave.

In the souvenir shops we have seen little wooden painted buildings - you can buy a bunch and make your own medieval village.  This photo to me looks like those little wooden buildings. Except they are real!!

Tonight it started to snow while we were walking around - big fat wet snowflakes that didn't stick on the ground, but surely added to the ambiance.

Gosh, everything looks so closed-in. It does look like a little toy town! The Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers buildings just go to show that architecture doesn't have to be hundreds of years old to be striking!
